PONTOON BEACH — A man walking across Illinois 111 was hospitalized after being hit by a truck Thursday.
Pontoon Beach Assistant Chief Chris Modrusic said the victim, 39, was walking across the highway at 5:02 a.m. near the intersection with Gateway Commerce Drive when he was struck by a northbound single-cab flatbed truck.
The driver, 51, is cooperating with the investigation and stayed at the scene after the crash.
“At this time, there’s nothing criminal that occurred,” Modrusic said. “Basically, he’s pretty shook up over it.”
The victim gave a statement to police and was transported by ambulance to Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. Information on his condition was unavailable because of a federal privacy law.
Modrusic said many people get off buses and walk to work at that time of morning. He said the victim may have worked at one of the warehouses in the area, although he did not know for certain.
