Pride Inc. is celebrating its 50th year of community beautification in the Riverbend.
It all began with an afternoon conversation about street trees between local surgeon and avid horticulturalist Dr. Gordon Moore and Telegraph Publisher Paul B. Cousley. Those trees were eventually planted and bloomed into the organization now known as Pride Inc. In February 1966, Pride Inc. was formed as a nonprofit organization dedicated to beautification efforts in communities surrounding the Alton Lake area. Pride was promoted as a nonpolitical entity supported entirely with private funds.
Today, Pride Inc. continues to thrive and support beautification through programs such as the annual Garden Tour, Bucket Brigade, Pride Eyes, Home of the Month and the Miles Davis Memorial Project.
In celebration of this special time in history, Pride Inc. soon will begin work on a project planned for the Statehouse Circle on College Avenue. Overgrown damaged trees will be removed in preparation for new trees and landscaping beds to surround the existing fountain. This project recently was approved by the city of Alton. Renderings for the plans will be displayed at Pride Inc.’s annual dinner.
“We’re so excited to have OSF Saint Anthony’s Health Center be the first to partner with us on this project and we look forward to partnering with other corporations and organizations that share our vision,” event chair Karen Wilson said.
Pride will celebrate the past 50 years at its annual fundraising dinner Thursday, April 7, at the Commons on the Lewis and Clark Community College campus. Cocktails begin at 5:30 p.m. with live music performed by the Louis Michael Group. Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. Everyone attending will be given a special memorial gift in gratitude for their continued support. Tickets are $60 per person or a table for eight is $450.
