ALTON — The public is invited to the unveiling of the James M. Bailey Sr. Memorial Way at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 2, in the area of Washington, Humbert and Salu streets.
Bailey died Aug. 10, 2012, at the age of 97. He was employed for 38 years with the Alton School District as a junior high school teacher and coach, junior high school assistant principal, junior high school principal and administrative supervising principal of elementary schools.
Bailey was Alton’s first black alderman and comptroller. He also was active in numerous civic organizations.
The ceremony will include the unveiling of new signs for that part of Salu Street.
