WOOD RIVER — As the mother of two sons who spend their time working with area youths and coaching in the Wood River and Roxana junior football leagues, Kay Slayden has heard the call of need from young athletes.
“There are so many families that have children who would like to participate but can’t because they don’t have the shoes needed,” Slayden said. “My sons Jason and Scott both work with the junior football teams and they have seen kids stop playing because they may not be able to afford the basics like shoes. A single mom shouldn’t have to keep her kids out of sports because she’s fighting and working hard to make ends meet.”
Slayden is humbly reaching out to the community to donate gently used football, baseball and soccer cleats for local children. In searching for used shoes, Slayden has spent money out of her own pocket while browsing through yard sales and auctions. She’s been spreading the word and asking friends and neighbors to keep a watchful eye to spot bargains on used shoes.
“I know there are people out there that may have some cleats in the closet they’re no longer using,” Slayden said. “If someone has an athlete that has graduated from school or grown out of their athletic shoes, I’ll be happy to come pick them up if they’d like to donate them. If people are at a yard sale and they can pick up a pair of cleats for a few dollars, that would be one more kid that is able to play. I’ve tried to keep my costs down to about $5 per pair.”
Slayden is not asking for monetary donations but would accept any help from residents or businesses. Call (618) 410-6839 to arrange for the shoes to be picked up.
