Community Rally at the Raceway will consist of six phantom race heats and one championship race. The races feature cardboard vehicles that move with a series of rolling dice.
MADISON — Community Rally at the Raceway to support local steelworkers’ needs is set for Nov. 3 at Gateway Motorsports Park.
Event proceeds will be disbursed through the United Way of Greater St. Louis labor liaison. Three local mayors have partnered with the Granite City Rotary Club and other civic, business and labor leaders to raise funds by sponsoring and hosting the event.
There are no earplugs needed for the event’s phantom races — sponsored cardboard cars that competitively move with a series of rolling dice. The event will consist of six “heat” races, the championship race, food and fun. Gates open at 5 p.m., with the event revving up at 6 p.m. Tickets are $20 each and can be purchased at eventbrite.com.
The idling of the U.S. Steel facility at the end of 2015 has affected more than 1,600 steelworkers and their families. Many of these displaced workers have run out of unemployment benefits, lost their health care and are struggling to make ends meet. This unprecedented situation appears to have no immediate end in sight.
