Gov. Bruce Rauner swears in Illinois State Police Director Leo Schmitz in a ceremony Tuesday in Springfield.
SPRINGFIELD — Gov. Bruce Rauner Tuesday administered the oath of an officer to Leo P. Schmitz, the newly appointed director of the Illinois State Police at the Illinois Capitol Building.
Schmitz was appointed by Rauner on Feb. 4, 2015, and unanimously confirmed by the Illinois Legislature on Feb. 17.
Prior to his appointment, Schmitz spent more than 28 years in law enforcement.
“It is a great honor to administer the oath of an officer to Director Leo Schmitz,” Rauner said. “The oath symbolizes the very essence of why brave men and women volunteer to protect and serve others. Director Schmitz’ experience, leadership and dedication will continue to move the Illinois State Police forward and improve the safety and quality of life in Illinois communities.”
The ISP enforces the laws protecting the public while providing special services to local, state and federal agencies. The ISP’s most significant responsibility is the safety of citizens through law enforcement, investigations, forensic services, patrol, technical assistance and safety education.
“I am honored to have been appointed by Governor Bruce Rauner to serve as director of the ISP,” Schmitz said. “The many upcoming challenges we face together will undoubtedly be difficult, but not insurmountable. We will not compromise our primary goal of providing outstanding police services to those we are sworn to protect and serve throughout Illinois. I am grateful for this opportunity and look forward to continuing the outstanding reputation earned by the men and women of the Illinois State Police.”
After graduating from Southern Illinois University, Schmitz began his law enforcement career in 1986 with the Chicago Police Department patrolling the streets of Chicago. Throughout his law enforcement career, Schmitz has received numerous special commendations, honorable mentions and recognition awards. Schmitz rose through the CPD’s ranks all the while continuing his education through senior law enforcement management courses and programs.
