Disaster volunteers with the American Red Cross provided emergency food, clothing and shelter Thursday to an Alton couple after a morning home fire in the 100 block of West 19th Street.
Red Cross volunteers also were providing emergency food Thursday to a Granite City woman after a tree fell onto her home, causing damage in the 2600 block of Madison Avenue.
The Red Cross is able to respond quickly when emergencies happen thanks to donors and volunteers. The American Red Cross of Eastern Missouri is a member agency of the United Way of Greater St. Louis.
The Red Cross is part of the All Ready campaign, a unified effort among emergency preparedness experts in the bi-state region that focuses on the importance of individual preparedness. The campaign encourages three steps of preparedness: make a plan, get a kit, be informed.
