ALTON — Travel routes around the intersection of State Street and West Broadway Avenue will be affected with work scheduled for May 23-24.
The closures are necessary to complete work pertaining to the city’s State Street sewer separation project. The combined sewers will be separated for this project, with new storm sewers being installed while the existing sanitary sewers stay in place.
Westbound traffic on West Broadway west of Piasa Street will be reduced to one lane and shifted into the south lanes, while eastbound traffic also will be reduced to one lane and shifted into the south lanes of West Broadway west of State Street. Access to State Street from West Broadway will not be allowed while this work is being completed. Also, the west end of Sugar Alley will be blocked so no traffic will be able to turn onto State Street from Sugar Alley. State Street will be closed to all traffic south of West Third Street as well.
The work is expected take one to two days to complete; future road closures around this area will be required when remaining items of work are to be completed. By completing this work on Monday and Tuesday, it should not affect weekend business traffic. City officials are working with the contractor to minimize closures.
