COLLINSVILLE — Two sisters died after a one-vehicle crash Saturday, Sept. 20, southwest of Holiday Shores.
Sgt. Jeff Snyder of Illinois State Police District 11 said Shelby Kibler, 77, of East Alton; and Eleanor Kohlmiller, 84, of Wood River, died at area hospitals after the crash at 4:27 p.m. at 7030 State Route 159, near the intersection of Illinois 159 and Illinois 140.
Witnesses told police a 1990 Chevrolet Celebrity station wagon drifted off the road, struck a concrete culvert, spun around and hit a telephone pole.
An on-scene state trooper said the women’s injuries did not appear life-threatening, but because authorities were unsure about internal injuries an ARCH helicopter took Kibler, the driver, to Saint Louis University Hospital. An ambulance transported Kohmiller to Alton Memorial Hospital.
Both women were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, Snyder said.
According to the Alton Daily News website, a joint visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at Marks Mortuary in Wood River, where services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday.
