Soapbox cars at the finish line in Spring Grove, Minn.
EAST ALTON — The 23rd annual Soap Box Festival on Saturday, Sept. 10, will allow youths the opportunity to race in a specially designed soapbox car down Berkshire Hill.
Races are scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. In addition to the races, the event is a family affair that includes a diverse group of vendors, food, crafts, activities and businesses displaying their products. The event will be postponed to Sunday, Sept. 11, in case of rain.
Soapbox cars are provided for the participants through sponsorship from area businesses. Participants must meet Stock Car Division requirements to participate in the event: they must be age 7 or older; 4 feet to 4 feet, 9 inches tall; and 55 to 90 pounds. Restrictions are a result of the car’s design as well as insurance and safety requirements. Participants must be able to pass a safety check, fit comfortably in the car, operate the brakes and show ability to handle the steering.
The fee to participate is $2 for a village corporate resident and $4 for a non-resident. A $1 late fee will be applied to registrations received after Wednesday, Aug. 31. The fee includes a program, picture in the car, and a T-shirt. There is a maximum of 200 races; participants are advised to register early.
A vending area in the parking lot across from Shop ‘n Save will include crafts, activities, game and food booths, and more.
Festival organizers are seeking crafters who want to sell or display their goods and businesses wanting to promote a cause. Booths can be reserved by calling (618) 259-7411.
The festival would not be possible without the help of volunteers. Volunteers can assist with race set-up, test runs, safety checks, start and finish line help and cleanup. Those interested in volunteering can call (618) 259-7411.
Registration forms are available at the Keasler Complex, 615 Third St. in East Alton, or online. For information, call (618) 259-7411.
