The Southwestern Piasa Birds Scholar Bowl team placed fourth at the Class A Illinois High School Association finals in Peoria. The team will compete in the national tournament April 26 in Atlanta.
The Southwestern Piasa Birds finished their season with a fourth-place finish in the state Class A IHSA finals.
This was Southwestern’s first trip to state in Scholar Bowl. They are ranked No. 11 in small schools nationally. Southwestern won sectionals in Carlinville against last year’s state champion, Litchfield. This win put the Birds in the elite eight grouping.
The Piasa Birds traveled to Peoria on March 20 and in their pool they played Peoria Christian, Nashville and Riverton. After losing a close first match to Peoria Christian, the Birds rebounded and won the next two matches to propel them into the consolation round against Sterling Newman Catholic High School. Urbana University High was this year’s state champion.
The Piasa Birds fought hard but ended up with fourth-place finish in the state. The final record for the Birds was 88 and 22. The Piasa Birds will travel to the national tournament April 26 in Atlanta. The Birds are led by 12-year head coach Matt Hasquin.
