LITCHFIELD — A Springfield woman was seriously injured in a crash on Interstate 55 Tuesday morning.
According to an Illinois State Police District 18 press release, Wilma Polly, 78, was driving a 2003 Nissan north at milepost 46 in Macoupin County at about 11:18 a.m. when she lost control of her vehicle. The vehicle traveled into the median, hit a concrete culvert, became airborne and struck the rear axle of a southbound Freightliner, causing the truck to overturn onto the Nissan. The truck driver, a 59-year-old man from Arlington Heights, was not injured.
Polly was airlifted from the scene and taken to a nearby hospital. Information about her condition was not available.
The southbound lanes of I-55 were closed with traffic diverted at exit 52 for about two hours.
Polly was cited for improper lane usage and failure to wear a seat belt.
