EDWARDSVILLE | A St. Louis man police say was shot at a Venice club died in a single-vehicle Granite City crash early Sunday.
In a news release Monday, Madison County Coroner Stephen P. Nonn identified the victim as Lonnie Christopher Roberson, 38, of Eagle Valley Drive in Country Club Hills, a north St. Louis County suburb.
Coroner’s Investigator Shane P. Liley pronounced Roberson dead at 2:50 a.m. at the site of the crash at 15th Street and Madison Avenue.
The Granite City Police Department is investigating the crash. Granite City officers responded at 1:24 a.m. Sunday to the area of 15th Street and Madison Avenue in reference to a crash. Upon arrival, it was discovered the vehicle was traveling north on Madison Avenue near 15th Street at what appears to be a high rate of speed. The vehicle exited the road, striking multiple utility poles, before coming to rest on its roof. There was another man in the car, believed to be the driver, who was transported to a St. Louis area hospital in serious condition.
Preliminary investigation indicates Roberson was being transported to Gateway Regional Hospital in the vehicle from the scene of a multi-victim shooting early Sunday at a Venice club, identified as L.T.’s Lounge. Initial reports indicate there were six gunshot victims, none of who appear to have serious injuries. The Venice Police Department is investigating the shooting.
An autopsy Sunday afternoon revealed the victim had a single projectile recovered from his right knee. The preliminary results of the autopsy indicates the cause of death will be related to blunt force injuries sustained during the crash and not the gunshot wound.
Routine toxicology studies will be undertaken to determine the presence of alcohol or drugs.
Funeral services are pending.
