Most local libraries are members of the Illinois Heartland Library System, which provides libraries with delivery of items for resource sharing, along with the option of applying for grants from the Illinois State Library.
Five hundred twenty five public, school, special, and academic libraries belong to SHARE as a full, transitional, or affiliate member. Library patrons have access to more than 10 million items, including books, DVDs, audiobooks, and music CDs, to name a few. Patrons of full member libraries can place a request on any of those items, on the online patron access catalog (www.illshareit.com), and the items will be delivered at the local library to be checked out, taken home and enjoyed.
Many of the SHARE member libraries have joined together to form the 3M Cloud — a part of eReadIllinois, the ebook consortium started in the fall, 2013, with funds provided by the Illinois State Library and Jesse White, Illinois Secretary of State. At present, the 3M Cloud collection includes almost 7,000 eBooks that can be checked out and downloaded from the online patron access catalog (www.illshareit.com) at no cost to the patron. eAudiobooks will soon be added to that collection, as well. The collection includes eBooks for kids, teens, and adults, and covers a wide variety of interests in fiction and non-fiction books. And you don’t have to worry about overdue fines because the eBook will automatically disappear from your device after the loan period (two weeks) is up.
A number of SHARE member libraries have also formed an electronic magazine consortium, called Zinio. Patrons can check out and download a wide variety of magazines to their computer or reading device. There is no limit to the number of magazines that can be checked out, and there is no loan period to worry about. After you check out a magazine, it is on your computer or reading device until you choose to delete it.
