The Alton Education Association rejected the Alton School District’s latest contract proposal on Oct. 27, and has voted to file an 10-day intent to strike notice.
The full 10 days of the notice must elapse before teachers can strike. The association was 95 percent in favor of the intent notice.
The ball now returns to the Alton School District’s court for possible further negotiations. The district is battling financial difficulties, due in part to declining property tax rates. Union representatives say a plan by the district to implement a restructuring based on grade levels as opposed to location in the 2016-17 school year as a cost-cutting measure would result in the loss of jobs for teachers.
