A 16-year-old girl died in a single-vehicle crash in rural Highland Friday, Aug. 29, according to a press release Tuesday from the Madison County Sheriff’s Department.
Sheriff’s deputies responded to the crash at 7:33 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29, on Michael Road near Iberg Road in rural Highland. Highland Fire and Rescue as well as Highland EMS responded to the scene.
Deputies arrived and found a red 1994 Chevrolet Corvette off the north side of the road in a field. Evidence indicated the vehicle was traveling west in the 13000 block of Michael Road when it left the road and rolled over at least one full rotation before coming to a stop.
The vehicle was occupied by two juvenile females at the time of the crash. Both occupants were transported from the scene to area hospitals. The driver was in serious condition at the scene and was subsequently airlifted by ARCH to a St. Louis area hospital. The passenger was treated for non-life threatening injuries. The 16-year-old female driver subsequently died from injuries sustained during the crash.
Police did not release the victims' names.
The accident is still under investigation, but a preliminary evaluation of the evidence indicates excessive speed was a contributing factor.
