In the early morning hours last Tuesday, firefighters from East Alton, Rosewood Heights and Holiday Shores joined Bethalto firefighters in battling a blaze that raged through garages and threatened nearby homes.
The Bethalto Fire Department was called out to reports of a fire in the 500 block of North Prairie shortly after midnight and found two garages on fire. The firefighters soon extinguished the blaze, helped by the other departments, but the garages, one housing a 100-pound propane tank and ammunition, were a total loss. Fire and smoke damage to three nearby structures, including homes on nearby James Street, was minimal. A nearby above-ground swimming pool also was destroyed.
The Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the fire.
