ROXANA — Women come in all shapes, sizes and colors, but what’s universal is they could use the support of their communities.
The It’s 4 U Mom Ministry at First Baptist Church aims to provide support for all women in the area. Ministry director Renissa Francis is passionate about that task.
“It’s a ministry for moms, but we include women of all ages,” Francis says.
The ministry is a local branch of a national ministry, It’s 4 U Mom, Building Relationships Through Every Stage of Mothering. Francis volunteered to start the local ministry in late 2014 when her pastor brought the idea to the congregation. Francis said she gladly volunteered because it sounded like a great opportunity.
The ministry meets at First Baptist Church, 100 S. Central Ave. in Roxana. Meetings are every fourth Tuesday of the month except November and December, when they meet on the third Tuesday. Meetings begin at 6:15 p.m. and include a nationally known speaker, refreshments and a special craft for participants.
Francis says the ministry is rapidly growing from its humble beginning of a couple dozen participants.
“We are very proud of the growth,” Francis says.
This year’s theme for the ministry is Celebrate! Each meeting brings in a speaker who touches on different subjects that help women succeed in their roles. In past months, Francis says they have had chefs and principals, and a missionary from Africa is set to speak soon.
“We try to touch on all subjects based on the ages of our guests,” Francis says. Although the topics differ, they all are based on the teachings of Christianity.
November’s speaker will be Lissa Pruett of Mothers Against Drunk Drivers.
The ministry also provides free child care during each meeting and a relaxing craft to help women unwind.
“We want to pamper moms each meeting to help them relax,” Francis says. “But you don’t have to be a mom.”
Francis says she was excited to spearhead the ministry because there was not a group in the area that catered to moms with children older than preschool age or for women in general. There are eight women on the ministry’s board and although they have no budget, the support the ministry has received has been enough.
“(We’re funded) completely on the grace of God,” Francis says. “And 100 percent donations.”
The ministry also involves children, who have a play group at 9:30 a.m. the first Saturday of the month. They will be doing a Polar Express party from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 12.
The ministry is open to all women and they do not have to be members of the church to participate.
