ALTON — Crews from Illinois-American Water are working to repair five leaks connected to a water main break in downtown Alton, and reinforcements are on the way.
“We have a team coming from East St. Louis to help,” Karen Cotton, manager of external affairs for Illinois-American Water said. “Safety is a number one priority of course, but our crews will be working as fast as possible to get this resolved.”
The break occurred Thursday evening near Alby and Broadway. As a result, a boil order is in effect for residents in the area, mostly businesses. My Just Desserts will be closed on Friday due to the event.
“Once water service is restored, a boil order is in effect for 36 hours,” Cotton said. “We went door to door to let those affected know about the order.”
The area currently without water and under a boil order once water is restored includes the residents along Broadway from Piasa to Market streets and Alby from Front Street to Third Street.
“This is only affecting about 25 customers,” Cotton said. “This is a significant pressure event, but we expect to have all repairs made today.”
