An abundance of code violations in and around the Hiway House Motel has prompted the village to issue an order of evacuation for the 20-plus tenants residing on the property.
Current guests have been asked to vacate the premises at 3023 Godfrey Road by 11 a.m. on June 6. Mayor Mike McCormick informed the property owner, Harjeet Singh, of the order on May 29. The violations could be pricey but are attainable and include padlocked doors, inactive smoke alarms and bad wiring.
“Because this establishment is one where patrons sleep and reside, such violations are of even greater concern,” Godfrey Fire Protection District Chief and Village Fire Code Official Erik Kambarian said. “I, along with other members of the inspection team, are ready to work with Mr. Singh to address these violations and make Hiway House a safe place.”
