ALTON — City officials are organizing resources in preparation for the upcoming battle against rising waters.
The Public Works Department, which is supervising the flood preparation efforts, has filled sandbags using an automated sandbagging machine provided by Madison County. They will begin stacking sandbags between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. Tuesday at Williams and Carroll streets. Anyone who wants to volunteer should contact the Alton Police Department at (618) 463-3505, ext. 249, for instructions.
Public Works has suspended the leaf vacuum schedule because of the flood preparation until further notice.
The Alton Marina closed at 4 p.m. Monday and Ameren Illinois was contacted to disconnect the electrical system.
Southbound U.S. 67 is closed until further notice and there will be a police officer at the end of the bridge to ensure no barricades are moved. The Missouri Department of Transportation will contact Public Works tomorrow regarding the possibility of opening southbound traffic on the Clark Bridge. The alternate route into Missouri will be Illinois 143 eastbound to Illinois 3 South.
There are still numerous reports of street closures within the city. All the River Road’s east and westbound lanes are closed until further notice.
The Argosy Casino will close at 6 p.m. Monday; a reopening date is pending.
Drivers are advised not to drive through water covering roads.
