ALTON — Senior Services Plus will participate in Senior Independence Day on Saturday, May 2, to raise funds for services to older adults.
Volunteers will collect funds, rain or shine, at the corners of Brown and Main in Alton, College and Washington in Alton, and North Alby and Humbert in Godfrey. Other organizations will be collecting in 17 other communities. Volunteers will be out from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Senior Services Plus receives much of its funding from AgeSmart Community Resources. The funds come from both the state and federal government. Since 2011 funds from government resources have decreased 14 percent. The population of people older than 60 has increased 16 percent. Those with modest savings but not poor enough to be on Medicaid are affected the most by these decreases. This means without that simple home delivered meals or help getting to the grocery store or doctor individuals may prematurely enter a nursing home, which is vastly more expensive than home and community-based services like those provided by Senior Services Plus.
