Athena Grace was born on July 9. Over the last week, she has received blood components from Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center donors through an ECMO device that supports oxygenation of her blood. Athena is being treated for a congenital diaphragmatic hernia at a hospital served by MVRBC. Her dad, Andrew, has been a frequent platelet donor, even before platelets were used to help save his daughter's life. Her grandpa, Tony, is a donor relations Consultant for MVRBC.
We’re so glad to know when the blood components we collect, test, process and deliver to hospitals make a difference for patients in need. Please join us in sending our best wishes for a positive outcome for Athena's treatment and in sending our thanks to all of our loyal donors, volunteers and employees who make that treatment possible.
We're sharing this family’s story because we know it means a lot for blood donors to see the difference their donations make for patients around our region. Also, Athena’s birth happened to coincide with one of the most difficult periods of the year for the blood supply. Right now, we’re recovering from a loss of donations that occurred during the week of the Fourth of July. Summer holidays are always a tough time for the blood center to schedule enough appointments to maintain an adequate blood supply. In addition, we’re around 56 days after Memorial Day, which means the reschedule rate for appointments is very low, even as we try to push inventories back to normal levels.
With upcoming drives in the area, it would be a terrific time to help support the blood supply by making an appointment. Please see the drive information below. To schedule, call (618) 659-0542 or use our online scheduling system at www.bloodcenterIMPACT.org. And if you can, please share this story with friends and family who might be in a position to join our mission as a donor. Anthony and Andrew would be happy to hear from you!
