ALTON — A 31-year-old Alton woman was killed early Thursday morning in a crash with a semi tractor-trailer truck, police said.
In a press release Thursday, Madison County Coroner Stephen P. Nonn identified the victim as Stephanie R. Carrington. She was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:28 a.m. by Madison County Coroner’s Investigator Kelsey Wofford. The incident was first reported to authorities at 4:38 a.m.
Carrington died as a result of head injuries. She was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. Routine toxicological testing for the presence of alcohol or drugs will be performed at a later time.
Police said Carrington’s car, a silver 2005 Ford Explorer, was struck on the driver’s side by a Con-way Trucking semi tractor and tandem trailer.
The initial investigation indicates Carrington was traveling west while the semi was traveling north through the intersection of Martin Luther King Drive (U.S. 67) and 20th Street in Alton. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
The Illinois State Police is assisting the Alton Police Department with the investigation by completing the traffic crash reconstruction.
Martin Luther King Drive reopened at about 11:25 a.m.
Visitation for Carrington will be from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home, 2521 Edwards St. in Alton. A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.
