ALTON — A woman apparently jumped to her death Monday night from a grain silo at the Ardent Mills facility, police said.
Police Chief Jason “Jake” Simmons said an Ardent Mills truck driver was on the south side of the south grain silo at about 11:30 p.m. when he heard a thud and saw a purse on the ground. He looked up and saw a woman at the top of the building looking down at him. The driver called his supervisor and told him about the woman, after which she leaned forward and fell, Simmons said.
“It appears that she just jumped and fell 186 feet to the ground,” he said. “We believe she was up there alone; we believe it was a suicide.”
The woman was 40 years old and lived in Alton. Simmons said police are not releasing her name because the Madison County Coroner’s Office has not identified her next of kin.
Simmons said he believed it was the first time someone has jumped from the facility at 145 W. Broadway, formerly known as ConAgra Mills.
“I don’t remember this ever happening in the 22 years I’ve been here,” Simmons said.
