Alberta Hammond, 84, of East Alton, went to be with the Lord at 1:38 a.m. Wednesday, March 18, 2015, at Alton Memorial Hospital in Alton.
She was born on May 21, 1930, in Blytheville, Ark., the daughter of the late Herman and Elizabeth (Reams) Downing.
She married Cleo G. Hammond on Aug. 27, 1948, in Alton. He preceded her in death on Dec. 20, 1979.
In 1990, she married Robert Pollard. He preceded her in death in April 1994.
Alberta was a homemaker. She was a member of Beltline Christian Center in Alton, where she was very active. Alberta enjoyed traveling, yard work, especially her flowers and most of all spending time with her grandchildren.
She is survived by her children and their spouses, Kevin and Myril Hammond of Rockmart, Ga., Stan and Christy Hammond of Rosewood Heights, and Fonda and John Starbuck of Wood River; a daughter-in-law, Jan Hammond of Godfrey; a nephew, Lanny Pollard of Lansing, Mich., who was raised as her son; 11 grandchildren, Andrea, Amy, Kristin, Carissa, Jenna, Alex, Jenny, Stephanie, Craig, Melissa and Michelle; 17 great-grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Bernice and Gene Bohannon of Decatur; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Charles and Libby Downing of Fosterburg and Harold and Brenda Downing of South Carolina; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by a son, Dr. Dale Hammond; and two sisters, Lavada Pollard and Bonnie Nadine Fitzgibbons.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 20, 2015, at Elias Kallal Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 21, 2015, at Beltline Christian Center in Alton with the Rev. Harold Downing officiating.
Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.
