Alfred E. Woodard, 82, of Madison, passed away at 3:29 p.m. on Sunday, January 26, 2014 at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis.
He was born June 5, 1931 in Venice, a son of the late James and Irene (Steinhauser) Woodard.
Alfred retired in 1994 from the Housing and Urban Development after many years of dedicated service as a FHA loan processor. The United States Navy veteran proudly served his country during the Korean War. He was a dedicated and faithful member of the Granite City Masonic Lodge #877 and a Shriner with the Ainad Shrine Temple and loved his 40 years of belonging to the Ainad Compacts. He was also a member of the Eastern Star, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and Moose Lodge. He enjoyed his days of fishing and supporting youth hockey and will be remembered for the love and special times shared with his family and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Donna (Ellis) Woodard whom preceded him in death in 1993; two sisters, Nadine Remer and Lorene Mueller and two brothers, Malfred “Babe” Woodard and Larry Woodard.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Dawn and Joseph Denap of Granite City; son, Alan Woodard of Madison; two grandchildren, Erin Denap of Granite City and Brett Denap of Granite City; two brothers and a sister-in-law, David and Agnes Woodard of Madison and William Woodard of Granite City; many nieces and nephews; other extended family and friends.
In celebration of his life, visitation was at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City on Wednesday, January 29, 2014 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with a Masonic Service at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services was held at the funeral home on Thursday, January 30, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. with Reverend Charles West officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon. Memorials may be made to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children and may be accepted at the funeral home. www.irwinchapel.com
