Ann Pieper, 92, of Granite City, passed away at 10:20 p.m. Monday, April 4, 2016, at Anderson Hospital in Maryville.
She was born Nov. 22, 1923, in Granite City, a daughter of the late Henry and Katie (Malcic) Stajduhar. She married Henry Pieper on May 3, 1945, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Granite City and Henry passed away March 24, 1965. Ann was a dedicated and loving funeral director and a member of the Illinois Funeral Directors Association and Madison County Funeral Directors Association. She and her husband owned and operated Pieper Funeral Home in Granite City and she continued the tradition for many years following his death. After the closure of Pieper Funeral Home in 1988, she served the community working with Irwin Chapel for 20 years until her retirement in 2009. Ann loved music, singing, cooking and dancing and was very active in the past years at the former St. Joseph Catholic Church. She was a faithful member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Granite City, where she had served as a Eucharistic Minister, lector and soloist. She had also been a member of the church choir for over 50 years and was active with Young at Heart and Church Women United. She was professed in the St. Francis Lay Ministers 3rd Order and had served as a Past President of the St. Ann’s Altar Society.
Throughout the years, Ann was very active throughout the community and was a charter member and Past Regent of the Daughters of Isabella No. 1038, charter member of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus Tri-Cities Council No. 1098, Croatian Lodge No. 222, Elkettes Lodge No. 1063, Eagles Aerie No. 1126 and Business and Professional Women. She had served on many boards including the American Cancer Society and the Chamber of Commerce.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Judith and William Dallas of Granite City and Victoria and Kerry Bundy of Granite City; two sons and daughters-in-law, Lawrence and Mary Pieper of Festus, Mo., and John and Sheree Pieper of Florissant, Mo.; one grandson, Jonathan Bundy of Granite City; one granddaughter and her husband, Melissa and Ryan McCulloch of Springfield, Ill.; a great-granddaughter, Adilene McCulloch of Springfield, Ill.; a sister-in-law, Juanita James of Glen Carbon; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Robert and Mary Pieper of Granite City; many nieces; nephews; cousins; other extended family and countless friends.
In addition to her beloved husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Henry and Tony Stajduhar.
In celebration of her life, visitation will be 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday, April 7, 2016, at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City, with a prayer service at 5 p.m. Visitation will continue from 8:30 a.m. until time of funeral mass at 10 a.m. Friday, April 8, 2016, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Granite City with Father Jeff Holtman as celebrant.
