Anna Frances Johnson, 92, of South Roxana, passed away at 11:02 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 12, 2014, at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Alton.
She was born on April 19, 1922, in Joplin, Mo., the daughter of the late Roy and Rosa Lee (Smith) Hill.
Frances married Thomas W. Johnson on June 29, 1942, in St. Louis and he preceded her in death.
Frances, her husband, Tom, and children Tommye Lee and Mike traveled across the world as Sgt. Johnson pursued his career in the United States Air Force. When Tom retired from the Air Force after 22 years of service to his country, the family settled back in South Roxana in order for Frances to be close to her beloved parents. Frances began working for the Roxana School District in 1959 working in various positions. Frances truly enjoyed the years she worked for the school district. She loved people she worked with, especially the “kids.” In 1978, after a great deal of soul-searching, Frances decided to retire from the school district she dearly loved in order to spend more time with and be able to travel with her husband, Tom. Frances’ primary goal in this life has been to provide for her family and spend time with her children and grandchildren whom she nurtured, supported, and loved. She enjoyed family ge- togethers and looked forward to visits from her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Frances also loved to watch the Cardinals and “Dancing with the Stars.” She also enjoyed visiting with her favorite dog, Sugar, who will definitely miss her and the treats she spoiled her with.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Tommye Lee and Greg Adams of South Roxana; one son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Vickie Johnson of Roxana; six grandchildren and their spouses, Deanna and Don Thunberg, Michael and Meredith Boner, Jason Johnson, Brandon and Jenny Johnson, Gregory and Tammy Adams; 10 great-grandchildren, Jordan, Kyle, Caleb, Sarah, Ethan, Tyler, Jacob, Kaden, Kylen and Kameren; three great-great-grandchildren, Dawson, Ryly, and Peyton; and her cousin and best friend, Barb Lynn of Wood River.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Victoria Francine “Tori” Johnson; and two brothers, Thomas “Bus” Hill and Leroy “Jack” Hill.
In celebration of her life, visitation will be from 4 until 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2014, at Pitchford Funeral Home in Wood River. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 16, 2014, at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Wanda Cemetery in South Roxana.
