Bernice Julia (nee Hawks) Romann
Bernice Julia (nee Hawks) Romann, 103, of the Cambridge House in Maryville and formerly a lifelong resident of Granite City, passed away at the Relais Bonne eau Hospice House under the care of Hospice of Southern Illinois at 11:50 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, 2014.
She was born July 3, 1911, in Sand Prairie, a daughter of the late Youree and Rosa (nee Niederer) Hawks.
She married Otto H. Romann Dec. 18, 1976, and he preceded her in death on July 21, 1977.
Bernice retired in 1976 from the First National Bank of Granite City after 40 years of dedicated service in new accounts and as a teller. She was a graduate of Granite City High School and was a faithful member of Pontoon Baptist Church in Pontoon Beach and an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals baseball. Her quick wit, ready laugh and the twinkle in her eyes will never be forgotten. Holidays with her family and especially throughout the Christmas season always held a special place in her heart and was a cherished time to give and receive gifts. She also enjoyed working word puzzles and her earlier years of many travels, days of shopping and her many lunches and dinners with family and friends. Throughout all of these special events in her life, she never passed on a moment of capturing these with a photo.
She is survived and will dearly be missed by a niece, Patricia (nee Hawks) Helmkamp and husband, Wilbur of Moro; three great-nieces, Sue Ellen (nee Helmkamp) Rayborn and husband, Tom of Alton, Nancy (nee Helmkamp) Kessinger of Alton and Monica (nee East) Hepburn and husband, Laird of Cary, N.C.; a great-nephew, Jon East of San Diego, Calif.; numerous great-great and great-great-great-nieces and nephews; several cousins; other extended family and friends.
In addition to her beloved parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Leona Hawks; a brother, Raymond Hawk; and a niece, Jeanne (nee-Hawks) East and husband, Guy.
In celebration of her beautiful life, visitation will be at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City on Thursday, October 2, 2014 from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m., where funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 3, 2014, with the Rev.
