Carol Ann Playez Starkey, 76, of Alton, passed away Tuesday, April 14, 2015, at Alton Memorial Hospital.
She was born April 21, 1938, in Johnstown, Penn., the daughter of the late George Irving and Kathryn Playez. Carol resided there until WWII, moving to Alton after her father serving in the Army Air Force was killed in China Burma India Theater area. Her mother, Kathryn, a dental assistant to Dr.’s Botterbush and Cox, preceded her in passing in April 2015.
Carol married Robert Starkey on Sept. 3, 1955, he survives. Carol and family joined her husband overseas in Japan, Okinawa and Germany for 10 years and several military posts in the continental United States. On retiring from U.S. Army life, the family returned to Alton, where her husband was employed as an operating engineer at Shell Oil Company.
She was an avid Rams fan with inaugural and season tickets, as well as a member of the Clan Ram. An avid bird watcher, she loved cardinals, from watching them to collecting their memorabilia. She was an active member and past worthy matron of the Order of Eastern Star in Heidelberg, Germany.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years and three children, Cheryl-Ann Thompson, Carl E. Starkey and her “daughter by osmosis” Lee Davidson and her family; grandchildren, Cheri-Lee, William, Brett and their families, Kathryn Nicole, Joshua Ryan and Mikayla Kirsten. Also surviving are her sister–in-law, Sandy Jones and her family, and numerous family and friends from Pennsylvania to around the world. She will be sadly missed and leaves our hearts with an emptiness that will be hard to heal.
She is preceded in death by her parents and a son, Richard E. Starkey.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 17, 2015 at the Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Alton, where funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 18, 2015, with the Rev. Charles West officiating.
