Carolyn Matlock, 73, of Granite City, passed away Wednesday, March 16, 2016, at her home.
Carolyn was born Oct. 31, 1942, in Cape Girardeau, Mo., a daughter of the late Robert Stanley Smithey and Rose Laree (Randol) Smithey.
On July 6, 1963, Carolyn married Edward Matlock in McClure, Ill. They grew up together as children, living on the same street and attended the same church and school. As fate would have it, they married for life and later moved to Granite City, where they had two children. Carolyn had worked at Hudson Jewelers in Granite City as a sales associate, and she also enjoyed painting pottery in her younger years. Carolyn was an amazing cook and baker. There wasn’t anything that she couldn’t create in the kitchen. She thoroughly enjoyed attending church, singing in the choir, shopping with her daughter and reading. Her greatest joy was being a wife, mother and a grandmother to Austin and Savana. She referred to Savana as her little sweet pea, and Austin as her little preacher. Carolyn loved life, she loved to laugh, but most of all she loved her family. She will be deeply and sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.
In addition to her parents, Carolyn was preceded in death by two sisters, Alice Skiles and Sharon Turner.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 52 years, Edward Matlock of Granite City; loving children, Keith Matlock of Granite City and Rosalie (Clay) Schreckenberg of O’Fallon, Mo.; proud grandmother to Austin and Savana Schreckenberg; dear siblings, Robert (Gayla) Smithey of Ware, Ill., Nancy Smithey of McClure, Ill., and Donna Smithey of McClure, Ill.; extended family and many friends.
Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Sunday, March 20, 2016, at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road, Granite City.
In celebration of her life, funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, March 21, 2016 at Gracepoint Church, 2450 Pontoon Road, Granite City, IL, with Reverend Lee Jackson and Reverend Robert Smithey officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Cape Girardeau, MO, on Monday at 3:00 p.m.
Memorial donations may be given to Wood River Pentecostal Church.
