Carolyn Pennell (Reed) Kozicky, 97, of Godfrey, went to be with the Lord at 10:52 a.m. Thursday, July 16, 2015.
She was born on April 4, 1918, in Skowhegan, Maine, the daughter of the late Charles Granville and Sarah Pennell Reed.
She married the late Edward L. Kozicky on June 14, 1941, in Portland, Maine.
Carolyn attended the University of Maine, majoring in Home Economics, but her true talent was in music. Her late husband Edward Kozicky always said he fell in love with Carolyn while listening to her sing “Ave Maria” one Sunday in Church.
For more than 65 years, Carolyn studied music and shared her superb voice through solos and performances. Her concerts as a folk singer, accompanying herself on the autoharp and her solos in church were enjoyed by many. She sang in church choirs in State College, Penn., Ames, Iowa, and Godfrey, receiving a Certificate of Appreciation on her 95th birthday for her 45 years of ministry and service to the music ministries at Godfrey First United Methodist Church.
Carolyn was a devoted wife, mother and dedicated volunteer. In 1996, she received the Leadership Award from the Illinois Hospital Association after 35 years of volunteer work at Alton Memorial Hospital. She also volunteered at North Junior High School, at the Alton Psychiatric Hospital, and drove cancer patients to hospitals for treatments.
