Charles C. Hammon, 81, of Moro, passed away at 7:06 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, 2015, at his home.
He was born Jan. 28, 1934, in Jerseyville, the son of the late Charles Robert and Thelma L. (Stepp) Hammon and his stepfather, Glen L. Waters.
He married Eleanor Fee in Meadowbrook on Oct. 20, 1953. They celebrated 61 years of marriage. She survives.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Lonnie Hammon of East Alton; two grandchildren, Dustin R. Hammon of Melbourne, Fla., and Kristi A. Hammon of Alton; a daughter-in-law, Tammie J. Hammon of East Alton; a brother-in-law, Bud (Doris) Fee of Meadowbrook; a niece, Traci A. (Mark) Dooley of Holiday Shores; nephews, Tim (Janice) Fee of Bethalto, Todd (Joyce) Fee of Meadowbrook and Trent Fee of Peoria; and several cousins from Northern Mississippi.
Cliff served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1953 to 1956. He was employed in the forming department at Owens Illinois Glass for a number of years and later worked as a machine operator at Olin Corporation, where he retired in 1995. While in Civic Memorial High School he was a great athlete, playing baseball, basketball and football. He enjoyed gardening, all sports, and attending St. Louis Cardinals games. He loved dancing with his wife, going on short walks, taking vacations and most of all spending time with his granddaughter, grandson, son and Tammie Jean.
He cherished and loved the 40 years in a program that encouraged him to “live one day at a time,” and enjoyed helping others.
Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, April 26, 2015, at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, April 27, 2015, at the funeral home with Pastor Jason Pierce officiating.
Burial will be at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.
