Charles John Gerard “Chuck” Szczepanik, 55, of St. Louis, and formerly of Granite City, passed away at 6:25 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 2, 2016, at Mercy Hospital in St. Louis.
He was born Oct. 17, 1960, in East St. Louis, the son of the late Charles John and Marjorie Ann (Matthias) Szczepanik. Chuck was employed with the United States Postal Service with more than 20 years of dedicated service and was a member of the American Postal Workers Union AFL-CIO. He was also a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Tri-Cities Council No. 1098 in Granite City and the American Legion. Chuck had attended Saint Louis University High School and Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville, where he was a member of the T.K.E. Fraternity. He was a passionate reader, lifelong learner and enjoyed foreign language and religion. His wit and sense of humor will forever be missed. He is survived by three sisters, Marilyn E. Baumann and husband, Dave, of Granite City, Geri Ann Kurilla Brandmeyer and husband, Eric, of Edwardsville and Ann Margaret Sykes and husband, Craig, of Granite City; nieces and nephews, Greg and Alyssa Baumann, Kaitlin, Colleen and Kirstin Kurilla, Kelsey Ridpath and husband, Joe, Caleb Brandmeyer, Claire, Emily and Megan Sykes; great-niece, Aubree Kurilla; other extended family and friends.
In addition to his beloved parents, he was preceded in death by an infant brother and an infant sister, Mary Ann.
In celebration of his life, memorial visitation will be 5 p.m. until time of a Knights of Columbus Chalice Presentation and funeral service at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 9, 2016, at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City, with Father Jeff Holtman officiating. Private inurnment will be at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Edwardsville.
