Clifford O. Thurnau, 83, of Glen Carbon, died Monday, Nov. 24, 2014, at Eden Village Retirement Center in Glen Carbon.
He was born Thursday, July 9, 1931, in rural Saint Jacob, the son of Oliver and Mary (nee Liebler) Thurnau.
On Saturday, Nov. 24, 1979, he married Betty J. Thurnau (nee Stubblefield), who survives.
Clifford was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church, Edwardsville; Madison County Farm Bureau, Edwardsville.
He was born in St. Jacob Township and graduated from Highland High School in 1950. Clifford served with the U.S. Army, active duty during the Korean War from January 1953 to December 1954. He farmed many years near Hamel, operating a grain farm and raised black Angus cattle. He also worked for Madison Service Co., George Willaredt Farms, Worden Elevator and Suhre Farms. He enjoyed square dancing, going to auctions, collecting toy farm equipment and was very active with Rural Youth and 4-H.
Clifford and Betty were married 35 years, he was married to the love of his life and passed away on their wedding anniversary.
Survivors include wife, Betty J. Thurnau (nee Stubblefield) of Glen Carbon; stepsons, Kim (Norma) Bertagnolli of Collierville, Tenn., and David (Stephanie) Bertagnolli of Feeding Hills, Mass.; stepgrandchildren; one brother, Warren Thurnau of Saint Jacob; sisters, Olive Nungesser of Highland, Eleanor Pirok of Highland and Joan (George) Willaredt of Edwardsville; brother, Robert (Dorothy) Thurnau of Saint Jacob; and sister-in-laws, Alice Zarka of Casey, Luriel Bott of Brighton and Virginia Peterson of Williston, N.D.
He was preceded in death by: father, Oliver C. Thurnau; mother, Mary F. Thurnau (nee Liebler); sisters, Jeanette M. Taylor (died Dec. 15, 2009) and Lyla Gerstenecker (died Nov. 3, 2005); brother, Harold P. Thurnau (died June 23, 2013); sister-in-law, Betty Thurnau (died Nov. 5, 2014); brother-in-laws, Dale Gerstenecker (died Nov. 11, 2014), Delmar Nungesser (died Aug. 31, 1984), Henry Pirok (died Oct. 6, 2012), and Louis Taylor (died March 2, 2011); and sister-in-law, Laurine E. Thurnau (died April 21, 2014).
Arrangements are being handled by Dauderman Mortuary in Hamel.
Visitation will be held from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 30, 2014, at Dauderman Mortuary in Hamel and from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 1, 2014, at St. John’s United Methodist Church in Edwardsville.
Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 1, 2014, at St. John’s United Methodist Church in Edwardsville, with Directing Pastor the Rev. Sheryl L. Palmer officiating.
Interment will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 1, at Benld Cemetery in Benld.
