Connie J. Avila, 71, of Granite City, passed away on Wednesday, June 15, 2016, at her home surrounded by her family.
She was born on Feb. 2, 1945, in Portageville, Mo.; a daughter to the late George and Lorene (James) Black. Connie was a Quality Control Inspector at Capri Sun/Kraft Foods in Granite City.
Connie attended GC First Assembly Church and was a past member of the Mexican Honorary Commission. She will be remembered for her kind heart and all the special times she shared with her family and friends.
She is survived by and will be missed by her husband, Antonio Avila, whom she married on March 15, 1965; her children, Tonja and (Mike) Asperger of Granite City, Antonio M. Avila III of Granite City, and Nicole Avila of Granite City; grandchildren, Salvador Woods, Bruce Miller, Brittany Ybarra, Julia Blake, Antonio Avila IV, Tabitha Smith, Haley Dioneda, Jenna Smith, Tamara Kayich, and Luke Avila; great-grandchildren, twins, Salvador and Sylvester Blake, Henrix Woods, Ashton Ybarra, Julian Whitehead, Evelyn Woods, Clayton Miller and James “Jay” Avila; sisters, Peggy Garrison, Georgia Avila, Naomie Conrad, Diane Stemple, Rosie Cooley, Tammy Moon and Jeanie Eveland; and brothers, Harold Black and Bobby Black.
In addition to her parents, Connie was preceded in death by her brothers, Jimmy Black and Roger Black; and her sisters, Susie Wurst and Angie Williams.
In celebration of Connie’s life, friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 22, 2016, with a service at 7 p.m. at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City. Memorials are suggested to the Phoenix Crisis Center.
