Curtis J. “Sonny” Cawvey, 79, of South Roxana, passed away at 1:37 p.m. Friday, April 1, 2016, at Alton Memorial Hospital.
Born Jan. 12, 1937, in Highland, he was the son of Curtis Calvin and Alice (O’Shea) Cawvey.
A Navy veteran, Sonny had been a welder before joining the village of South Roxana Street Department and after retiring, worked as a school bus monitor.
He married the former Carolyn S. Gall on July 29, 1961, in East St. Louis. She survives.
Surviving also are two daughters, Angela S. Shoup of Dayton, Ohio, and Dawn M. Cawvey of Edwardsville; son, Marvin G. Ballance of Oklahoma; six grandchildren, James B. “J.B.” Ballance, Brittny M. Cawvey, Kalah Ballance, Kendun J. Brown, DaShia N. Brown and Abigail F. Shoup; two great-grandchildren, Cayden and Mackynlee McNeil; daughter-in-law, Brenda Ballance of Collinsville; three brothers, Harold A. Mowry of Florida, Larry (JoAnn) Cawvey of Cahokia and Mark (Donna) Cawvey of Dupo; and one sister, Sheila (Darrell) Griffen of Atlanta, Ga.
In accordance with his wishes, his body was cremated and will be interned in Wanda Cemetery in South Roxana at a later date.
A Celebration of Life service will be conducted at a later date.
Marks Mortuary in Wood River is in charge of arrangements.
