Dean Stiegemeier, 83, formerly of Bunker Hill and Godfrey, passed away Sunday, September 14, 2014, at 12:02 a.m. at Jerseyville Manor.
He was born Sept. 21, 1930, in Staunton, the son of the late Walter and Minnie (Hebenstreit) Stiegemeier.
He was united in marriage to Shirley Masterson on July 22, 1950, in Staunton.
Dean served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of the Korean War. Stiegemeier was a petroleum salesman for Macoupin Service Co. for many years. Dean was a member and former Commander of the American Legion Post No. 578 in Bunker Hill. He enjoyed playing sports in his younger years and was an avid Cubs and Illini fan. He and his wife were longtime members of the Bunker Hill “Sit and Chat Club” and he loved playing cards with family and friends.
In addition to his wife, Shirley; he is survived by two children, Brad (Lois) Stiegemeier of Creve Coeur, Mo., and Deanna (Chris) Hodel of Aurora; a sister, Josephine Carnahan of Prescott, Ariz.; and three grandchildren, Katie (Chantz) Brown of Blue Springs, Mo., Julie (Joe) Hanson of St. Ann, Mo., and Erin Stiegemeier of Creve Coeur, Mo.
He was preceded in death by his father, Walter; his mother and stepfather, Minnie and William Niehaus; and a sister, Dorothy Ross.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2014, at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto with Military Burial Rites at 6:30 p.m. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, 2014, at the United Methodist Village Chapel in Godfrey with Chaplain Judy Miller and the Rev. Jerry Wickenhauser officiating.
A private family burial service will be held at Rose Lawn Memory Garden in Bethalto.
The Arthritis Foundation or the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation are the memorials suggested by the family.
