Diane Schwendeman, 86, of Granite City, passed away Thursday, March 17, 2016, at her home surrounded by her family.
She was born Oct. 13, 1929, in Granite City, a daughter to the late William and Sue (John) Thomas.
Diane was a lifetime homemaker, a member of St. John United Church of Christ in Granite City and was an Elkett at the Granite City Elks Lodge No. 1063. Diane enjoyed traveling, cooking and reading. She was quite the “Jeopardy” and “Wheel of Fortune” fan, watching at every opportunity. Diane was a huge St. Louis Cardinals fan who even traveled to the spring training games. But most of all she loved to spend time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
She is survived by and will be missed by her husband, Millard “Poots” Schwendeman, whom she married on Sept. 16, 1950; her children, Tim Schwendeman of Granite City, Janet and (Rick) Vaughn of Granite City, Karen Schwendeman of Collinsville, and Claudia and (Joe) Bartholomew of Belleville; grandchildren, Travis and (Laura) Revelle, Kyle Revelle and fiancée (Meagan Henderson), Emily Vaughn, Natalie Vaughn and fiancé (Johnathon Hadley), Joey Bartholomew and Vinny Bartholomew; and numerous other extended family members and friends.
In addition to her parents, Diane was preceded in death by her brother, William “Biffo” Thomas and her sister, Martha Ruth “Sissy” Thomas.
In celebration of her life, friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at noon Thursday, March 24, 2016, at St. John United Church of Christ, 2901 Nameoki Road in Granite City, with the Rev. Karla Frost officiating. Memorials are suggested to St. John United Church of Christ, Granite City A.P.A. or National Alliance for the Mentally Ill. Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City, is serving the family.
