Donald Edward “Dody” Hayes, 79, of Alton, passed away at 12:40 p.m. Friday, April 15, 2016, at Eunice Smith Home in Alton with his loving family by his side.
He was born July 2, 1936, in Alton, the son of Edward and Mary Helen (Doyle) Hayes.
Don married Donna J. Pierce on June 1, 1958, in Springfield. They were married for 54 years; together they enjoyed the love of their beautiful family and traveling. Donna preceded him in death on Sept. 12, 2012.
Don was a member of College Avenue Presbyterian Church in Alton, attended Western Military Academy and graduated from Alton High School in 1955. He started working at the Alton Telegraph in 1951 as a part-time stringer photographer. He also worked for the Illinois State Police from 1957 to 1960 as a Communications Clerk, where he met the love of his life, Donna, who also worked for the Illinois State Police. He left the State Police to become a full-time photographer at the Alton Telegraph until 1977, when he retired. After retirement he spent 12 years working for the Alton Police Department in fleet maintenance. He also worked part-time for Argosy Casino Security for 4 years. From 1978 to 1979, Don served as a 7th ward Alderman for the City of Alton and was also a Commissioner for the Alton Exposition for 20 years. Don was a life-member of the Illinois Police Association and a longtime associate member of the Southern Illinois Police Chiefs Association, which was one of his great passions.
Don is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, Daniel and Lisa R. Hayes of Godfrey, David and Julie Hayes of Alton, Doug and Barb Hayes of Godfrey, and Darrin and Lisa G. Hayes of Godfrey; one daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Mark Macias of Godfrey; 13 grandchildren, Brian (Tara) Hayes, Scott Hayes, Courtney (William) Kinkel, Joni (Brandon) Whitfield, Lauren (Ryan) Hoefert, Hillary Macias, Jordan Hayes, Brittany Hayes, Kaitlyn Hayes, Rachel Hayes, Brandon Hayes, Emily Macias and Natalie Macias; and five great-grandchildren, Blakely Kinkel, Cameron and Rilynn Hayes, Jackson Hoefert and Caiden Nicholson.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his brother, Jon D. Hayes, and a granddaughter, Stephanie Hayes.
In celebration of Don’s life, visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 18, 2016, at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home, 2521 Edwards St., Alton, IL 62002.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 19, 2016, at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Alton with Pastor Mark Scandrett officiating.
Burial will follow at Upper Alton Cemetery.
