Dorothy M. Hinson, 87, of Madison, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2015, at Granite Nursing and Rehabilitation Center with her family by her side.
She was born on May 5, 1927, in Madison, a daughter to the late Earl and Hazel (Rote) Hinson.
Dorothy was a longtime schoolteacher, retiring from Coolidge Junior High in Granite City. Dorothy was a member of Suburban Baptist Church in Granite City and volunteered her time at John Cochran VA Hospital. She was past national president for the Phi Tau Omega Sorority and past state president of the American Legion Auxiliary. Dorothy was an active senior circle member at Gateway Regional Medical Center; member of Friends of the Library; member of the Amvets, V.F.W. and worked at the special Olympics every year. She was a former Girl Scout leader and past state Chapeaux of Eight and Forty. Dorothy will be remembered for kind heart, helping others and the special times she shared with her family and friends.
She is survived by and will be missed by her sisters, Eunice Whitsell of Mitchell, Norma and (John) Hillmer of Madison, and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her four brothers.
Friends may call on Friday, Jan. 16, 2015 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City. In celebration of her life, services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2015, at the funeral home with Pastor Clint Wisdom officiating. Burial will follow at St. John Cemetery on Nameoki Road in Granite City. Memorials are suggested to American Legion Auxiliary, Department of Illinois Educational Fund, Eight and Forty de Illinois, Nurses Scholarship Fund.
