Edith E. Ryan, 98, of Granite City, passed away at 5:50 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2016, at The Fountains in Granite City.
She was born Feb. 6, 1917, in Taylor Springs, a daughter of the late Charles Dougherty and Maude (Hicks) Bohnenstiehl. Edith retired in 1979 from the Granite City Treasurer’s Office after 14 years of dedicated service as a secretary. She was a member of the Granite City Elkettes, where she had served as a past president. Edith also enjoyed her time with the Butterfly Pinochle Card Club and attending the H.O.P.E. widow’s luncheon.
She is survived by two daughters, Mary Ann Randell of St. Louis and Barbara Ryan of Philadelphia, Penn.; one son, John M. and (Sharon) Ryan of Granite City; 15 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter, TerriLyn (Randell) Gasper; two sisters, Freda Seibold and Bertha Witter; and a brother, Harold Dougherty.
In celebration of her life, a memorial gathering will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 6, 2016, at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City.
Memorials are suggested to Shriner’s Hospital for Children or the Leukemia Foundation.
