Edith L. Nugent (nee Murphy), 82, of Mitchell, formerly of Sikeston, Mo., born Sept. 4, 1933, in Boston Mountain, Ark., died Friday, Oct. 30, 2015, in Mitchell.
Ms. Nugent was a homemaker and loved her children, flowers and pets. She was a member of Cedarview Baptist Church in Pontoon Beach.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John W. and Joyce (nee Ellis) Murphy; spouse, Denzil Jack Nugent, whom she married Nov. 29, 1979, in Miami, Okla.; sons, David Dery and Martin Evans; daughters, Cynthia Schildman, and Candace Evans; brothers, Donnie and Harchel Murphy; sisters, Bertha Burns, Patricia Freeman and Christine McCoy; and two grandchildren.
Surviving are her sons, Marshall (Charleen) Evans of Granite City and Gary Rhoads of Granite City; daughters, Nancy (John) Houston of Paris, Jackqueline Blandford of Vermillion, Connie (Roy) Jones of Fulton, Mo., Cheryl D. Watkins and Richard Stump of Fairview Heights, Carla J. Kelley of Granite City, Christi L. Evans and Bruce Papp of Edwardsville, and Carolyn (Vince) Fisher of Mitchell; brothers, Hubert Murphy of Bryant, Ark., Hershall (Eva) Murphy of Sikeston, Mo., Mike (Bev) Murphy of Sikeston, Mo., and James Murphy of Toledo, Ohio; sisters, Irene Schieder of Sikeston, Mo., Linda (Bill) Taylor of Florida and Judy Long of Palmyra; sister-in-law, Irene Murphy; brothers-in-law, Jack Freeman and Jr. McCoy; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2015, at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City. A celebration of her life will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2015, at the funeral home, with Cecil Cook officiating.
Burial will be in Sunset Hill Memorial Estates, Glen Carbon.
