Esther B. Twarog, 90, of Bethalto, passed away at 8:35 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, 2014, in Bethalto.
She was born Jan. 25, 1924, in Mascoutah, the daughter of the late Wilhelm and Matilda (Wilmsmeyer) Bramstedt.
She married Edward J. Twarog on Nov. 27, 1947, in Mascoutah. He preceded her in death on May 22, 1999. Esther worked at the VA Hospital right after World War II as an occupational therapist. She was a grade school teacher and then became a school counselor for Civic Memorial High School District No. 8 for 34 years, working until she was 70 years old. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Bethalto, the Women’s VFW Auxiliary and the teachers union. She was an election judge for many years and she enjoyed big band music and traveling, and had taken many camping trips to Europe plus traveling to the Soviet Union, China and Egypt.
She is survived by her three daughters, Kristina Douglas, Charlotte Guschl and Nina Lawrence; seven grandchildren, Adam, Tad, Peter, Philip, Jocelyn, Joanna and Rebecca; great-grandchildren, Olivia, Max, Hailey, Peyton, Sebastian, Rhue, Stella and Gwyneth; a sister, Charlotte Pivoras; a brother, the Rev. Paul Bramstedt; and her nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Jean; a sister, Ruth; and six brothers, Walter, Luther, Arthur, Robert, Wilham and Karl. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 2, 2014, at Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto. Visitation will continue from 10 a.m. until funeral services at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 3, 2014, at the funeral home with the Rev. Paul Bramstedt officiating.
Burial will follow at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis.
