Eugene “Gene” Vincent Roth, 82, of Alton, died with loved ones at his side on Friday afternoon, Sept. 11, 2015, at Integrity Health Care in Godfrey.
He was born Aug. 4, 1933, in Michael, Ill., the son of Anthony and Katherine Roth
Gene married Laverne Pohlman on June 2, 1953, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Brussels. She preceded him in death Dec. 2, 2004.
He served his country in the Army and then worked as a machinist for Olin Matheson until he retired in 1975. He was also a longtime member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Godfrey and a member of the Alton-Wood River Sportsman’s Club.
Gene is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Bob and Cindy Roth of Alton and Tom and Jennifer Roth of Godfrey; three daughters and sons-in-law, Vicky and Dan Bolin of Godfrey, Deb and Jack Hoefert of Godfrey, and Terry and Dave Stephan of Madison, Ala.; 12 grandchildren and their spouses, Chris and Andrea Roth, Greg and Jessica Roth, Katie and Mike Dohr, Shelby Roth and Jake Roth, David and Amy Bolin, Michelle and Kenny Jamison, Chris Hoefert, Laura Hoefert and fiancé, Jason Sandidge, and Sarah Hoefert, and Matt Stephan and Molly Stephan; 13 great-grandchildren, Samantha, David Jr., and Jonathan Bolin, KJ and Valerie Jamison, Ella and Alana Roth, Andrew, Tyler, and Caden Roth, Brady, Alex, and Robert Dohr; and a sister-in-law, Edna Roth of Hardin, Ill.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, Carl Snyders; one sister, Edna Roth; and one brother, Bill Roth.
In celebration of Gene’s life, visitation will be from 9 a.m. until time of Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 14, 2015, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Godfrey with Father Steve Pohlman as celebrant.
Burial will follow at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Godfrey.
Memorials may be made to St. Ambrose Catholic School or Marquette Catholic High School.
