Evangeline Stuart, 92, of Granite City, passed away at 5:50 p.m. Sunday, April 26, 2015, at Granite Nursing and Rehabilitation in Granite City.
She was born July 26, 1922, in St. Louis, a daughter of the late Theodore and Katherine (Balli) Gitcho.
She married James Barry Stuart Sr. on November 20, 1943, in Madison and he passed away on Feb. 22, 2009. Evangeline retired from Glik’s Department Store after many years of dedicated work in the offices. She was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church in Granite City, member of the Chamber of Commerce, Business and Professional Women, Eastern Star and the Phi Tau Omega Sorority. She loved her days of cross-stitching, gardening, tending to her yard, traveling and entertaining. She enjoyed spending time at Paddler’s Pool, collecting antique furniture and her many trips to Greece. She will be remembered for the love and special times shared with her family and friends.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Roger Belshe of Edwardsville; a son and daughter-in-law, James B. and Barbara Stuart of Granite City; four grandchildren, Jamie Stuart of St. Louis, Brett Crawford of Waterloo, Stacey Toomay of St. Louis and Stuart Belshe of St. Louis; three great-grandchildren, Carson Toomay, Quinn Toomay and Isla Hayes; three sisters, Lillian Barbieri of Granite City, MaryAnn Husmann of Jerseyville and Linda Scoville of Belleville; other extended family and many friends. In addition to her beloved husband of 66 years and parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Ted Gitcho.
In celebration of his life, visitation will be from 9 a.m. until time of funeral service at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 30, 2015, at the First Presbyterian Church, 2160 Delmar in Granite City with Jack Jenkins officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon. Memorials may be made to Shriner’s Hospital for Children or to First Presbyterian Church.
