Evelyn Jean Vanhorn, 84, of Wood River, passed away at 2:15 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2015, at Integrity Healthcare of Wood River. She was born Sept. 25, 1930, in Benton, Ill., the daughter of the late Clifford N. and Bertha A. (Doty) Eubanks. She married James Erbert “Bert” Vanhorn on Nov. 27, 1952, in Mount Vernon, Ill., and he preceded her in death on June 10, 2013.
Survivors include three daughters and two sons-in-law, Gay Cummins of Wood River, Pam and Gary Voyles of Wood River, and Lori and Randy McCoy of East Alton; two grandsons and their wives, D.J. and Erin Cummins of Bethalto, and Bobby and Krystal Cummins of Wood River; and a great-granddaughter whom she adored, Haylee Marie Cummins.
A registered nurse for more than 50 years, she worked at various facilities throughout the Riverbend. Evelyn was a member of New Hope Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, James Erbert “Jim” Vanhorn Jr.; a son-in-law, Donny Cummins; her twin sister, Emma June Gorman; another sister, Gladys Hunter; and one brother, Clifford Eubanks.
In celebration of her life, visitation will be from 9 a.m. until time of funeral services at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 29, 2015, at Pitchford Funeral Home in Wood River. The Rev. Frank Sparks will officiate. Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.
