The very Reverend Arch Priest, Father Thomas Succarotte, feel asleep in the Lord on Saturday, Aug. 8, 2015.
Father Tom was born on Sept. 16, 1944, in Wilmington, Del., a son to the late Francis and Olga (Herosik) Succarotte.
On Aug. 14, 1965, Tom married Tanya Button, the love of his life, in Wilmington.
He had graduated from Pennsylvania Military College (now Widener University) in 1974, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Corporate Finance. Tom then went to work for DuPont Company for 12 years in Wilmington until 1976. He then entered St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary, graduating with a Master of Divinity on May 1, 1978. Father Tom came to Madison on Aug. 1, 1979, and became the Parish Priest at Nativity of the Virgin Mary Orthodox Church until his retirement due to health issues on Dec. 31, 2010. He was the Dean of St. Louis Orthodox Deanery for many years. Father Tom was the police chaplain for Madison, Granite City, Pontoon Beach, Madison County Sheriff’s Department, State Police, FBI and the ATF during his years as a priest. He was also Chaplain for the Missouri and Illinois Railroad Police Association. Father Tom was instrumental in helping establish the Chaplain program for the ATF. He was an avid outdoorsman; in his younger years he enjoyed fishing and hunting. His greatest joy was serving the Lord and spending time with his family, especially with his grandchildren, whom he adored. Father Tom will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Father Tom is survived by his devoted wife of 50 years, Matushka Tanya Succarotte of Collinsville; loving son and daughter-in-law, Mark Edward Francis Succarotte and Angela (Moore) Succarotte of Pontoon Beach; proud grandfather to Elijah Thomas and Sophia Kathleen; dear sister and brother-in-law, Barbara Ann and Paul Schmidt of Wilmington; two nephews, Eric and Andrew; and extended family and many friends.
Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2015, at Nativity of the Virgin Mary Orthodox Church, Madison, Ill., with a burial service at 6 p.m.
In celebration of his life, a Divine Liturgical service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2015, at Nativity of the Virgin Mary Orthodox Church, Madison, with His Grace the Right Reverend PAUL Bishop of Chicago and the Diocese of the Midwest; Very Reverend Archpriest John Zdinak, Chancellor of the Midwest Diocese; Very Reverend Archpriest Timothy Sawchak, Dean of Kansas City Deanery; Reverend Father Nicholas Finley, Rector of Nativity of the Virgin Mary Parish; and other clergy.
Interment will follow at Nativity of the Virgin Mary Orthodox Cemetery, Edwardsville.
Memorial donations may be given to Nativity of the Virgin Mary Orthodox Church and will be accepted at the church.
