Gerald “Gerry” L. Cox, 68, of Brighton, passed away unexpectedly at 12:21 a.m. Wednesday, June 24, 2015, at Alton Memorial Hospital.
He was born Sept. 10, 1946, in Alton, the son of Eugene and Eline (Davis) Cox.
He married Linda E. Taul on Sept. 5, 1970, at the East Alton Church of God. She survives.
Gerry served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He worked in purchasing at the Dome Railway for 36 years, retiring in 2012. He was a member of the Bethalto Church of God. Gerry enjoyed spending his winters in Florida. Most of all he was a proud “Papa” who loved entertaining his grandchildren and was their number one fan.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Lori and Doug Wooden of Brighton and Julie and Rob Stoelzle of O’Fallon; four grandchildren, Nicholas and Allison Wooden and Paige and Scott Stoelzle; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Tom and Elva Marie Cox of Nixa, Mo., and Jim and Brenda Cox of Bethalto; a sister, Leona Cox of Brighton; a sister-in-law, Jeanne Cox of Alton and his nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Ronald Cox.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, June 28, 2015, at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. at the Bethalto Church of God with Pastor Shea Hughes officiating.
Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto with military rites given by Alton VFW Post 1308.
Memorials may be given to the D3 Missions Project at the Church.
